Quick Tips for Finding a Better Fitting Bra

§       Get measured every six months.  The size of your breasts and their position can fluctuate often.

§       You should be able to take a deep breath with your bra fastened at the middle hook.

§       The center of your bra should lie flat against your rib cage.  A gap means the cup size is too small.

§       Straps should never dig into your shoulders.  If loosening them leaves you supportless, choose wider straps instead.

§       If the back of your bra rides up, the band size (34, 36, etc.) is too large.

§       Wear it once, wash it once – 100 times, and it’s time to retire!  To wash: hook shut, fold in half and tuck straps inside cups.  Wash in a lingerie bag with mild detergent; hang dry.

NEVER, EVER wash a bra in the machine. First of all, even in a lingerie bag, the fabric can twist around the wire, which wears on the fabric and shortens the life of the bra.

Secondly, the most common reason that a washing machine has to be repaired is that an underwire has come out of the bra fabric and gotten into the holes of the washer tub. It jams up the works, and causes damage that is either expensive or impossible to repair. Good for the Maytag man, not so good for you.

I live in England, and have shopped at Bravissimo, which is an outstanding lingerie shop for ‘the big-boobed girl’. They will take back a bra for exchange or refund for ANY reason for up to six months–provided it has not been machine washed. That’s how bad machine washing is for a bra. They can tell if it’s been done even once.

Another tip: a brand new bra should fit perfectly on the LOOSEST hook, not the middle. As the bra wears in, it will stretch, and you will move it to the tighter ones. A quick trip is to put a dot of coloured nail polish on the tag when it is new. When you move it to the second hook, put another dot. When you move to the third, you can put a third dot on, and know that you’re going to look for a replacement soon.

But don’t ever wash it in the machine. You cut the life in about half.
